Rhos children bury time capsule at building site

03 May 2019

Children at a Swansea Valley school have buried a time capsule at a building site for future generations to unearth.

Pupils at Rhos Primary School were asked to create a time capsule with interesting items of the day inside, including a school jumper, a pen, chocolate wrapping, an electronic tablet box, a love spoon and a newspaper. This week a handful of children made the short walk to Persimmon Homes West Wales’ Allt Y Celyn development, opposite the school on Neath Road.

The children watched excitedly as their items were put inside a weatherproof time capsule and buried on site. The school’s pupils have also been involved in designing road safety signs, the best of which have been made into real signs and erected outside the development. And earlier this year all of the pupils were treated to a tour of the building site.

Mike Freeman, health and safety manager at Persimmon Homes West Wales, said: “We always strive to engage with the communities in which we operate, and it has been great to work with Rhos Primary School on these projects. They had produced a super time capsule. Who knows, maybe one day it will be unearthed and people will be able to get a glimpse into life in 2019.”

Claire Jones, deputy headteacher at the school, said: “The children really enjoyed visiting the building site and seeing the time capsule buried. “It’s been a great way to get the children thinking about house building. Who knows, maybe there are some budding builders amongst them.”
