Site tour of new Carmarthenshire development for councillor

20 September 2023

The beginning of construction at a new site that will deliver a hundred new homes for local people in Pembrey has been marked by a tour with the local councillor.

West Wales region was pleased to welcome Cllr Michael Thomas to their Awel Y Mynydd development, halfway between Llanelli and Kidwelly, which will see 100 homes built. The initial release includes three and four-bedroom homes starting at an affordable price of £239,995.

Cllr Thomas was shown around the site where the first completions are expected before the end of year. Two three-bed properties have already been snapped up as part of the shared ownership offer in association with Carmarthenshire County Council on the site.

As part of Persimmon’s contribution at Awel Y Mynydd, 20% of the new housing is a low-cost option that nominated purchasers can purchase at a discounted value. The housebuilder is also contributing £146,000 to local education services and £50,000 towards local drainage improvements, as well as providing on-site public open space.

Commenting, Cllr Michael Thomas – Carmarthenshire County Councillor for Pembrey – said:

“I was very happy to receive a tour of the initial homes being built at Persimmon’s site in Pembrey. Providing 100 new homes for local people is no small feat and will help people build their families in a beautiful part of Wales and develop the local community.

“With discounted and public housing being included in the site, there is positive news that means those of varying housing need locally will be helped by this new development.

“The financial contributions that Persimmon will make to enhance the local education offering and improve drainage in the area also demonstrates further community benefits beyond helping to tackle the housing crisis.”

West Wales region Managing Director Stuart Phillips added:

“Persimmon has had plans to build more homes for local people in Pembrey in the pipeline for a while so I’m delighted that we’ve started construction at Awel y Mynydd.

"We take pride in the fact that we will offer discounted and public housing, ensuring that we meet the diverse needs of local people in search of a new home.

“We were pleased to host Cllr Thomas for a tour of the site, as we are committed to fostering engagement with the communities where we build, and want to ensure we leave a positive and lasting legacy in the local community.

“That is why, beyond the jobs this will create locally, we will also be contributing investment to improve drainage, support education, and preserve green spaces in the area.

“We are hitting the ground running and we look forward to delivering the dream of home ownership to more local families.”
