South Midlands region helps to kick-start the career of Solihull apprentice

20 November 2023

A Solihull-based carpenter is celebrating passing his two-year apprenticeship, completed at Solihull College and University Centre whilst working for South Midlands region.

Drew Farnsworth completed his level two qualification at the Orchard Mews site in Shirley, enabling him to become skilled in his trade.

Drew said: “The apprenticeship has been great in understanding how a fast-paced company like Persimmon works - the scale of it and the timings too - I've worked alongside so many different people and you learn something new from everyone which just helps to improve my skills. I would love to have my own company one day and work alongside Persimmon on new build properties.”

Martin Gregory, Construction Trades Lead Assessor and Lecturer at Solihull College and University Centre, said: “Drew has been an exceptional apprentice who has excelled in his practical and theory work at the college.

“Drew has demonstrated all the essential qualities required for employability and the future generation of the construction industry with his outstanding commitment to detail in his carpentry practical work, attitude for good timekeeping, and attendance. He is now progressing onto his Level 3 and has a bright future ahead of him with Solihull College and University Centre, and Persimmon Homes South Midlands.”

Committed to training schemes of the highest standard, Persimmon Homes has been recognised as a Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer in Government rankings, demonstrating the developer’s success at training traditional site skills such as bricklaying and joinery, as well as its drive to grow talent throughout the business.

Russell Griffin, Managing Director at South Midlands region, said: “At Persimmon, we’re passionate about developing future talent and equipping our apprentices with the practical skills they need to thrive in the working world, as well as ensuring they have the necessary theoretical background from our partnerships with local colleges.

“It’s a delight to work with our apprentices on a daily basis, helping to coach them throughout the early stages of their career and watch them develop their skills.”
