Support for local youth groups
14 July 2015
Two groups that provide much-needed activities for young people in the North West have received a financial boost from Persimmon Homes North West.
Golborne Girls FC and the 3rd Wigan Scout group each benefited from £1,000 donations thanks to the Persimmon Homes ‘Community Champions’ initiative.
The scheme provides match-funding to charities, groups and organisations working to improve the lives of local people.
David Hodgson, sales director for Persimmon Homes North West, said: “There are hundreds of worthy causes across our region and each month it is a challenge to choose two from the many nominated, but Golborne Girls FC and the 3rd Wigan Scout group really stood out.
“Both organisations create opportunities for young people to learn, play and develop in a safe environment. We applaud the hard work done by volunteers who freely give their spare time to help their communities – they really are champions and we are proud to support them.”
Based at St Cuthbert’s School in Wigan, the scout group is hoping to celebrate the Cub Scout centenary in Essex. For many of the members, this will be their first experience of camping and the Persimmon donation will help towards the cost of tents and also providing secure storage for equipment at the school.
The 60 members of Golborne Girls FC compete in four league teams, with ages ranging from four to 15. The club works hard to raise its own funds to cover pitch fees, training equipment, kits, insurance costs and league fees.
Anyone interested in joining the team, or able to offer other funding support to the team, can find out more at Golborne Girls Football Club.
David added: “Both of these excellent groups give young people a taste of teamwork and achievement, so we are pleased to support their endeavours.”
The Persimmon Community Champions initiative is a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match money they have already raised themselves. Nationwide the company will donate a total of £750,000.
Two groups will be chosen from across the North West region every month and organisations are encouraged to apply by completing an online form at Persimmon Community Champions.
