Support for school rugby programme

We have donated £1,000 to support a Norfolk school rugby programme.

The funding was delivered through the Community Champions scheme, which aims to support grassroots organisations in the areas where we are building.

Jorden Knell, head of sales for Anglia region, said: “Sport provides much-needed opportunities for young people to develop teamwork, discipline and personal responsibility, as well as the health benefits of regular exercise, so we are pleased to be able to assist this excellence initiative.”

The schools rugby programme is operated by North Walsham RFC in partnership with the Wensum Trust high schools, and currently has more than 3,000 children taking part from 13 high schools and 15 primary schools across Norfolk.

North Walsham RFC head coach Ryan Oakes said: “The club works with a large group of state schools to introduce and develop rugby, which teaches the values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

“Since the pandemic, participation levels in rugby have decreased, meaning fewer children have the opportunity to learn these values outside of the classroom.

“We also offer ‘rugby days’ and tournaments that are hosted at North Walsham RFC. These days give a full day learning experience where students get outside of their school and classroom and into a totally different environment.

“Persimmon’s generous donation will help us to offer this experience to more students and be able to fund additional coaching and equipment support in lessons and after school clubs.”
