Suppporting construction skills for schools
09 May 2017
A community centre in Worcester is set to invest in new tools to provide construction skills training to youngsters thanks to a donation from Persimmon Homes South Midlands.
The Building Block at Warndon Community Centre has been gifted £1,000 from Persimmon Homes South Midlands courtesy of Community Champions, a scheme that awards two charities with up to £1,000 each month. The group, based off Shap Drive, train disabled and excluded children in plastering, plumbing, woodwork and DIY skills, as well as offering courses to community members.
Warndon Hub has a great range of modern facilities including stages for live performances and meeting rooms. It was extended in 2011 with a £1.2m investment, with The Building Block opening in 2015. Helen Scarrett, chief executive officer at Warndon Community Centre, said: “We really can’t thank Persimmon Homes enough for their generous donation. The Building Block group is a great way to teach young people skills that could help them out in the future and even set them on a career pathway. We need new tools including power saws and drills to be able to carry on with our training so the donation will help out so much.”
Skills taught on in the sessions include bricklaying, plumbing, tiling and carpentry. Carol Selway, head of sales for Persimmon Homes South Midlands, said: “Supporting charities in the areas in which we build is very important to us and The Building Block Group. The charity aims to fill vacancies in the construction centre which naturally is really important for the industry. We hope our donation will really help the group in their bid to buy new tools. If people were unsuccessful last month, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next Community Champion.”
Persimmon Homes South Midlands has 90 brand new homes at its Hatton Grange development in Worcester, with prices starting from £133,000. To apply for Community Champions funding visit Persimmon Community Champions.
