Swansea woodland restoration project handed cash boost

22 February 2021

Volunteers working to maintain and restore historic woodland in Swansea have been handed a financial boost from Persimmon Homes.

The Penllergare Trust was set up to in 2000 to help care for Penllergare Valley Woods, an idyllic Victorian landscape which had become overgrown.

Persimmon Homes West Wales has stepped in with a £1,000 donation to help the group with its continued work.

Stuart Hemsley-Rice, commercial officer of the group, said: “We are extremely grateful for this generous donation from Persimmon Homes.”

“Since 2000, more than 100 local volunteers per year have helped to care for this historic and significant site. Our volunteers have been nationally recognised for their brilliant efforts by being awarded with a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.”

“The many hours of volunteering that they provide helps keep this essential green lung in north west Swansea as beautiful and well cared for as it is.”

“The Trust relies on donations from friends, fundraising activities and grants. This funding will go towards helping support the amazing work of our volunteers, with new tools and training.”

More than 100,000 people a year visit the woodland.

Sharon Bouhali, sales director at Persimmon Homes West Wales, said: “We are very aware of Penllergare Valley Woods and the work the volunteers do as this beautiful landscape is close to our headquarters.”

“It’s a beautiful area which I know is appreciated by many. The work the volunteers do is invaluable and we are pleased to be able to support them with this donation.”

Persimmon is currently selling stunning new-build homes across south west Wales, including in Llanelli at its Parc Brynderi and The Bridles developments, and at Tir Y Bont in Bridgend.
