Talented young figure skater on the road to stardom

13 October 2021

A talented young figure skater from Telford has been awarded funding from one of the UK's largest housebuilders.

Arin Yorke received £1,000 from Persimmon Homes West Midlands through our Community Champions project to help cover his training and competition expenses. Each month Persimmon donates up to £1,000 each to two groups or individuals in the area.

The 14-year-old recently competed at Alexandra Palace in London and came first with a new personal best of 39.28, placing him top in the country in the intermediate novice men’s category.

Rachael Yorke, who applied for the funding on behalf of Arin, said: “We’re extremely grateful that Arin has received this donation, it’ll give him a massive boost for the rest of the year. He’s been competing nationally for around four years now and is due to participate at the British Championships at the end of November, hoping for a podium spot.

“Arin currently trains twice a day at Telford for around five hours and is having private lessons with his coach Mr Jason Bowman. He also does off ice training to build up his stamina for his jumps.

“As a family we all help out when it comes to funding and we have no regrets because he’s extremely talented and loves it so much. However, costs are constantly on the up and sometimes the stress and worry about paying for it all can get the better of me.

“This £1,000 will go such a long way towards covering his sessions at Telford ice rink so we just wanted to say another massive thank you to Persimmon for choosing us.”

David Greengrass, head of sales for Persimmon Homes West Midlands, said: “We are very pleased to be supporting such an exciting local talent. Not only this but we’re delighted that a community sports facility, Telford ice rink, will also benefit from this £1,000 as Arin spends a lot of his time training there with his coach.

“Arin is currently performing at a very high level and recent results indicate that he’s on the right path to have a long, successful career in the sport. Providing funding to help him achieve his dreams is an honour and we wish him all the very best for the future.”
