Trainee buyer builds up for national award

13 October 2014

A trainee assistant buyer from Leeds has been shortlisted for a national house builders Young Achievers award.

Thomas Merry has been recognised for his hard work and dedication by Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire and will represent the region in the national finals, taking place on 24th October.

The 23 year-old will join 23 other regional nominees with the aim of receiving the Persimmon Homes Business Trainee of the Year title.

The inaugural Young Achievers award programme was launched by Persimmon Homes earlier this year to showcase its apprentices and sales trainees who have gone above and beyond to succeed in their role.

Persimmon Homes believes it’s important to invest in its young workforce, with the chief executive, Jeff Fairburn placing emphasis on the role trainees can play in the business’s future as he himself started in the construction industry as a 17-year-old apprentice quantity surveyor.

Wayne Gradwell, managing director of Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire, said: “We manage a robust apprentice programme taking more than 100 young people into the business nationally each year.

“We feel it is important to reward those youngsters who have got off to a flying start and Thomas is a perfect example of this.

“Thomas was new to the construction industry when he joined as a graduate back in November 2012. His eagerness to learn was instantly evident and we have never looked back.

“His composed attitude to work load and professionalism has allowed us to progress his responsibilities much sooner than we would expect.”

Thomas will be joining two other West Yorkshire nominees, Alexandra Hope, who is going forward for the Sales Trainee of the Year title and Harrison Tucker, for the Trade Apprentice of the Year award. Cash prizes with be presented for national category winners as well as the overall Young Achiever of the Year 2014 accolade.

Wayne added: “It wasn’t easy choosing the individuals to best represent our region. However, we feel that Thomas, Alexandra and Harrison are shining examples of our future workforce and are well on the road to forging successful careers in the construction sector.

“We would like to wish them the very best of luck in the finals, but to us they are already winners.”
