Two community champions are rewarded

An independent cancer charity and a community-based gymnastics club are two of the latest funding recipients from our pioneering Community Champions programme.

Cancer Campaign in Suffolk is an independent charity based in Ipswich, which supports people before, during and after their cancer diagnosis. Registered in 1998, its mission is to improve the health and well-being of patients through education, counselling, complementary therapies and well-being workshops.

Chief Executive Karen Hare said: “We source our funding through private grants, foundations and public donations. We approached Persimmon for support to expand our complementary therapy and well-being workshops, both in the community and in hospital. Offering a community resource will remove some people’s fear of visiting hospital and give them a choice where they have their treatment.”

Haverhill Gymnastics offers an extensive range of activities and classes for enthusiasts of all ages and varying levels of ability. These range from pre-school and ‘parent-and-me’ sessions, to adult recreation and competitive classes.

The group is currently in the process of moving its headquarters to larger premises, as spokesperson Kevin Woolcott explained. “Along with the growth of the town, we have expanded our activities and membership to the point where we now need more spacious, modern facilities,” he said. “Naturally this move comes with considerable expense, and we particularly need backing to fund new equipment for our future home.”

Persimmon Homes Suffolk, based in Great Blakenham, provides financial support for two local charities and good causes each month, through its national Community Champions programme – which recognises the outstanding work carried out for the common good, throughout the county.

Managing director Ian Hamilton said: “We believe in supporting those communities where we operate, which is why we are proud to announce these latest donations. Cancer Campaign in Suffolk provides a vital resource for individuals and families affected by cancer, while Haverhill Gymnastics offers new and exciting opportunities to local people, irrespective of age, gender or ability.”
