Community cash for East Anglian good causes

Two East Anglian good causes helping local people to cope with the impact of Covid-19 have received a cash boost from Suffolk.

The regional team has donated £1,000 each to Long Melford’s Hourglass charity and Roydon Primary School in Diss as part of its Community Champions scheme.

Hourglass supports older people at risk of harm, abuse and exploitation. As a result of lockdown, calls to the charity’s helpline have increased by 21 per cent.

Seamus Connolly, who applied for the funding for Hourglass, said: “The over 65’s had the strictest lockdown, with many experiencing total isolation. Unfortunately, this exposes some to abuse. With the donation from us, we will be able to offer more support, so thank you.”

Young children have also been adversely affected by Covid-19. Roydon Primary School is fundraising to buy replacement playground equipment for its students.

Natalie Thornton-Jones, from the school, said: “The children deserve to have outside activities to help with social, team building and play skills which are so important for their mental health especially following the pandemic.

“We can’t thank Persimmon enough for the donation which will help to provide our children with a safe outdoor space to play.”

Suffolk managing director Ian Hamilton said: “Supporting local causes in the areas where we are building enables us to help those who improving the lives of local people.

“Both the elderly and young children have been affected as a result of the pandemic and we are delighted to be able to help these generations get back on their feet.”
