A Derbyshire construction apprentice is on track to become a chartered surveyor and believes this is the best way to learn a trade.
Katherine Hornsby shares why she considers her on-the-job-training will help secure her future.
The 19-year-old joined Persimmon Homes Nottingham last year and is currently pursuing a Level 4 HNC in Construction and the Built Environment at Derby College to become a quantity surveyor.
Katherine recognised the value of work experience and knew an apprenticeship would enable her to learn and qualify, while gaining a practical understanding of the job.
Inspired by her father, Katherine initially began her training as a commercial apprentice but is now pursuing the route to becoming a quantity surveyor.
Katherine said: “I was drawn to the construction industry by my father who is a site engineer. He has influenced in my career choice by sharing his knowledge and passion and helping me to understand the various career opportunities within the industry.
“When I joined the Persimmon team, I was very grateful to be given the opportunity to gain a broad understanding of all aspects of the commercial department, enabling me to make an informed decision on the direction of my training and future career. This flexible and real-life experience could not be possible if I had been in full time education.
“I am at the early stages of my course and really appreciate the support and guidance of my mentor. I feel proud every time my line manager gives me a new task and project; it feels a little daunting but immensely good to have the trust of your colleagues.
“I’m very pleased to be already working for one of the UK’s leading housebuilders and my plan is to complete my qualification and progress up the career ladder to become a chartered surveyor and eventually build my own home.
“I would definitely encourage others to become apprentices. It’s hard work and you must be kind to yourself as you are not going to understand everything immediately, but with a good team behind you it is possible to train, work and get a salary.”
Neil Follows, managing director for Persimmon Homes Nottingham, added: “Each year we employ a number of apprentices in various roles as we believe it’s important, for both the business and the construction industry, to be supporting and developing our future workforce.
“Katherine’s determination and passion are clearly evident, so we are very happy to support her career.”
