A Coatbridge-based ice-skating club hit hard by the effects of the pandemic has clinched a £1,000 donation to fund off-ice equipment for skaters – particularly those in financial difficulty.
North Lanarkshire Figure Skating Club has members ranging from six to 47-years-old, with a broad range of backgrounds, abilities and challenges – including two Olympic hopefuls. Yet with enforced closures due to Covid 19, the club has struggled to maintain sessions for skaters. But thanks to its resourceful coaches and members, a growing number of off-ice training sessions have come on-stream to help maintain fitness and skills.
Committee member Claire Doran said: “This whole area has been hit hard and we want to support those whose families have struggled over the last year. We’d like to acquire more off-ice facilities and run classes, which is why we approached Persimmon Homes for help.”
With its regional office in Perth, the company is part of the award-winning, national Persimmon group. Each month, under its pioneering Community Champions programme, it selects two good causes to support with donations valued at up to £1,000.
Managing director at Persimmon Homes North Scotland, James MacKay said: “Like many clubs and societies, North Lanarkshire Figure Skating club has suffered over the last year, with facilities closed and with no ways to pursue its usual fundraising opportunities. We salute their determination to press ahead with off-ice resources and hope our donation makes a big difference.”
