Afan Lido FC Ladies & Girls Football Club future looks bright
03 November 2020
Overwhelmed leaders at Afan Lido FC Ladies & Girls Football Club are looking forward to a bright future after bagging the £20,000 third prize in the Persimmon Homes Building Futures sport category.
The club was formed less than 18 months ago to give women and girls the chance to play football in the Port Talbot area in South Wales.
Today membership stands at almost 70, making it the self-proclaimed “fastest growing club in the area”.
The club has dreams of ripping up the 26-year-old AstroTurf pitch at its ground and replacing it with a state-of-the-art 3G pitch fit for the 21st century.
The project will set them back in the region of £150,000 – and Persimmon’s backing has put them well on the way.
“This is a remarkable amount of money for us at a club – it’s truly incredible,” said the club’s Phil Davies.
“We are so extremely grateful to everyone who voted for us – and for Persimmon for everything they have done for this club.”
“This is just the start. We have the ambition and determination to succeed and to get more girls and ladies playing football.”
“It will be amazing not just for the club, but for the whole community who will be able to use it.”
“The future’s bright, the future’s red and white!”
The club embarked on a persistent social media campaign to secure enough votes for third place, including badgering Welsh celebrities such as Rob Brydon and Michael Sheen.
Phil said: “The Building Futures campaign was amazing. We worked hard and got everyone in the club and the community involved. ”
“Everyone has felt a part of it and it’s really brought everyone together.”
“The final event was amazing. Of course, we had our hopes pinned on £100,000 – but £20,000 is an amazing achievement.”
Phil said the club is committed to continuing to raise funds.”
“We have many meetings planned and general ear-bending to get the facility up and running as it’s desperately needed,” he added.
Andy Edwards, managing director of Persimmon Homes West Wales, said: “I’m delighted that Afan Lido FC Ladies & Girls Football Club won third prize.
“They’re a great club with big ambitions. I’m looking forward to keeping in contact with the club to see how they progress, and to see if we can work together in the future as well.”
