Bridgend school scoops tree-mendous donation
12 July 2021
A Bridgend primary school is celebrating after winning a £1,000 grant to plant new trees on the edge of its site.
St. Mary's Catholic Primary School, on Llangewydd Road, has bagged the funding from Persimmon Homes West Wales.
The money comes as part of Persimmon’s Community Champions initiative, which sees 64 good causes across Great Britain awarded up to £1,000 every month.
Lyndon Watkins, headteacher at the school, said: “As a faith school, we have to raise a significant amount of our income, utilising extra support where available.
“We don’t have the luxury of funds for things like trees and shrubs for the school grounds. This money will enable us to buy new plants for our border, whilst at the same time turning this into a learning experience for our pupils by getting them involved in the planting process.
“It’s great to see Persimmon Homes getting involved in the community in this way.”
Sharon Bouhali, sales director at Persimmon Homes West Wales, said: “We are delighted to be able to support St. Mary's Catholic Primary School.
“Our new Llys Ystrad development borders the school so we’re very pleased to be able to lend our neighbours a helping hand.
“This is exactly what Community Champions is all about.”
Persimmon is preparing to start construction at its Llys Ystrad development at the former Ysgol Bryn Castell site on Llangewydd Road.
