Bringing a charity’s wish one step closer

A Devon charity providing round-the-clock care for vulnerable people with mental health issues has been awarded £1,000 by our South West region to help adapt an ageing hospital building to support its clients.
Step One, which has its headquarters in New North Road, Exeter, contacted Persimmon Homes for a donation from its innovative Community Champions programme, in which the company provides financial backing for local charities and good causes.
Spokesperson Carey Mackenzie said: “We cater for people who have experienced mental health crises. As part of their rehabilitation, before leaving our care, we carry out in-depth assessments to ensure they are at no risk and can cope with everyday life.
“To create the right environment to ensure the best possible recovery, we are developing an assessment room at Cypress Hospital which will be accessible, inviting and fit-for-purpose. This is a major undertaking over several months, which is why we approached Persimmon Homes to ask for financial help.
“We are very grateful for their kind donation as this will help our clients resume their lives, which is great news for them and the wider community.”

“As a charity they offer vital, specialist support which addresses people’s mental health, their ability to work and their capacity to be a part of the community. We salute their excellent work and hope that our donation can bring their vision of a properly functioning assessment centre a little closer to reality.”
