Community project awarded £1,000

Allerdale House and Drive in Newcastle upon Tyne is to receive a £1,000 from the Community Champions scheme.
Allerdale House is a scheme specifically for residents with care needs, which is owned by Newcastle City Council and managed by Your Homes Newcastle (YHN). YHN also manages the non-care need Tyneside flats and bungalows for those aged 55+ which are also owned by the council and are adjacent to the building; their address is Allerdale Drive.
Staff based at the site applied to Community Champions to pay for some extra equipment outside of the main project build.
Jen Vinton, YHN’s director of customer services, said: “Our staff work tirelessly to engage residents in all sorts of activities, but many of them moved in during lockdown and have vulnerabilities that mean they can feel uncomfortable about mixing indoors, so we knew there was more we could do to help.
“We plan to use the money from Persimmon to provide a covered outdoor space where residents can visit and take part in a book, DVD and jigsaw exchange without having to meet up indoors if they don’t feel confident doing so. We also plan to use this space as a bulletin board to promote local activities and events and effectively create a hub where residents can meet and chat outside safely.
“We hope that these moves, as well as our other daily activities like bingo and dominoes and the weekly knitting group with equipment provided by £100 from our own YHN Community Fund, will help to reduce any social isolation our residents may be feeling. We would like to thank Persimmon Homes North East for this generous donation, which is going to make a big difference in making our plans a reality.”
Debbie Zaben, sales director for our North East region, said: “This is a brilliant initiative that works right at the heart of the community. We are very pleased to be able to help with this £1,000 donation and know it is going to be money very well spent.”
