New homes coming to seaside Devon town
20 February 2024
Scores of families will be able to access high-quality, affordable homes after Torridge District Council gave the thumbs-up for 200 new properties in Bideford.
Persimmon Homes Cornwall & West Devon secured planning permission to construct a development of one to four-bed homes on land at Atlantic Park off Clovelly Road on the western edge of the town.
The plans will help meet the area’s housing need, including alleviating pressure on Torridge’s 2,000-strong housing list. As part of our significant community contribution, 19 per cent of properties will be transferred to a housing association partner for local people.
The vision for 1.4 hectares of open space on-site include land for amenity and natural green space, parks, sports and recreation grounds, a community orchard, and play spaces for children of various ages. A new cycleway and footpath will link the site into existing development.
The development will deliver a 10% increase in biodiversity though the provision of 100 bird boxes, 100 bat boxes, hedgehog holes in boundary fences, and hedgerow planting.
The scheme had previously gained Bideford Town Council's endorsement, pending support from Devon County Council Highways, which was achieved following constructive collaboration between Persimmon and the Highways Authority.
The region recently donated funds from our Community Champions scheme in Bideford, with £1,000 going to Shammy Rovers FC at the end of last year.
Commenting, Persimmon Homes Cornwall & West Devon’s managing director Andy Hill said:
“I am delighted that our plans to bring 200 high-quality, affordable new homes to Bideford have been given the green light by Torridge District Council, opening up access to the dream of homeownership for local families.
“Our commitment extends beyond mere construction – we are dedicated to creating a thriving community that meets the diverse needs of its residents, with a mix of housing tenures and sizes, helping alleviate pressure on Torridge's housing list while fostering a sense of place.
“We are proud of the sustainable features of the site, from enhancing biodiversity and green spaces to implementing an eco-friendly drainage system, alongside the creation of inviting play areas.
“As we progress with this project, Persimmon Homes is steadfast in our commitment to outstanding construction and engaging with the community, with the goal of creating an enduring positive legacy.
“My thanks go to the project team and Torridge Council officers for their collaborative spirit and constructive efforts towards our shared goals in delivering for local people.”
