New homes for south Somerset to help housing need

Site plan for South Petherton off Hamsfield Lane

Plans to bring up to 60 new high-quality homes to South Somerset in a move that will help alleviate local housing need have been submitted to the Council.

South West region proposals would see 60 houses built on the edge of South Petherton off Hamsfield Lane, 35% of which will be transferred to a local housing association partner, helping put a dent in the 11,900-strong housing list in Somerset.

The proposals include an extension to the open space next to Lime Kiln Avenue that could also feature a new children’s play area, as well as open space to the south-eastern boundary.

Careful consideration has resulted in plans which provides an appropriate buffer to the open countryside, and fit seamlessly within the development boundary of South Petherton.

New pedestrian links will ensure permeability throughout the scheme as well as a more direct route to the surgery, biodiversity will be enhanced through the retention of existing hedgerows and the provision of wildlife boxes, and the subsequent material palette will reflect the local vernacular.

Additionally, approximately 16 parking spaces are proposed to service the South Petherton Surgery to help reduce the existing parking infrastructure pressure.

As part of its commitment to the areas in which it develops, Persimmon has donated to local organisations through its Community Champions scheme, which sees over £700,000 donated across Britain each year. Recent recipients include Ilminster Town Council and St John’s Ambulance Taunton.

Commenting, Persimmon Homes South West Managing Director Daniel Heathcote said:

“Persimmon is proud to have submitted plans up to 60 new homes in South Petherton, developing high-quality homes and infrastructure for the village in a thoughtful and considerate manner.

“Should they be approved, this scheme will not only ease pressure on Somerset’s housing list through the provision of a policy-compliant level of affordable housing but, we will help meet the general demand for new homes in the area.

“We are proud of a comprehensive vision that will see biodiverse enhancements, active travel links, and common green and play areas for the benefit of local families on site, helping to create a sense of place and leave a positive and lasting legacy in the area.

“Persimmon looks forward to working with Somerset Council to ensure this scheme meets both of our objectives, delivering benefits for the community of South Petherton.”
