Persimmon champions new Plymouth community centre

26 October 2023

Building Plymouth member Persimmon Homes has donated £2,500 to the crowdfunding campaign underway for the city’s homelessness charity, Shekinah, to help furnish their new centre at Stonehouse Creek.

Opening in January 2024 after the refurbishment works are completed, Shekinah will move from their current location in Bath Street to the purpose designed centre to continue supporting people who are experiencing all forms of homelessness.

Offering a wider range of services needed to tackle health and wellbeing inequalities in the local community, Shekinah’s new centre will provide expanded community facilities; health services; training, education, employment and housing services; and a café. By better integrating the services from a wide range of local providers and enabling delivery of these critical services from this new single site, the Stonehouse Creek centre will significantly improve access for the city’s most vulnerable people.

The five-star developer currently has two live sites in Plymouth, with new homes at Palmerston Heights and Saltram Meadow coming soon.

Presenting the cheque, Jane Cartwright, Persimmon Homes Cornwall & West Devon’s Sales Director said “Persimmon is delighted to support Shekinah’s excellent work through our Community Champions scheme, which seeks to support local organisations in the areas in which we develop as part of our commitment to leaving a positive and lasting legacy.

“Shekinah’s work in helping people in need fulfil their potential while supporting their health and housing situations is an incredibly noble cause that perfectly fits the definition of a community champion. We hope that our contribution will help their work endure so that the residents of our Plymouth developments and the future generations that live in those homes will be able to benefit from Shekinah’s help should they ever need it.”

John Hamblin, Chief Executive at Shekinah, added “This very generous donation from Persimmon Homes is another great example of a local business supporting Shekinah in making a difference in the local community. The money will be used to help furnish our new Stonehouse Creek centre to create a warm, welcoming, and safe space for people using Shekinah’s services. We believe that the people we support deserve better and we hope that by creating an inspiring space, people will feel more confident in tackling some of the issues that they face.”

The ambition to raise £20,000 through Shekinah’s crowdfunding campaign by 8 November will enable the charity to invest in furnishing the new centre with high quality furniture and equipment. To donate and find out more about the crowdfunding campaign visit the website.
