Trail is tribute to development's history

04 August 2021

A history trail, benches and even the children’s play area at the Hansons Reach development, are designed to recognise the site’s history and links to the construction industry.

A total of £120,000 of Section 106 funding has been given to the project at Hansons Reach in Stewartby as Persimmon Homes East Midlands recognises the heritage of the 730-home development on the former London Brick Company site.

Ben Purdy, technical director for Persimmon Homes East Midlands, explained: “These Section 106 contributions are required as part of the planning process and, in the case of Hansons Reach, this element was to provide public artwork that would create a sense of time and place.

“The London Brick Company was the industry leader in its heyday and we thought it would be interesting to invest in the project celebrating the craftsmanship and heritage of the company locally.

“There is a signposted trail around the development which highlights the points of interest and an information board which explains the whole history of the company. In addition, we have installed brick-shaped benches and incorporated a ‘truck’ at the playpark with London Brick Company regalia.”

A commemorative floor mural is also being designed and Persimmon Homes has teamed up with public arts specialists at The Artnership to commission the piece, which should be installed in 2023.

Ben added: “The design of the mural frame is inspired by the gates to the old brickworks. Crushed London bricks will fill the interior and it will be sealed with resin before it is set into the ground at the development.

“It will make a stunning centrepiece and will remind people about the role the London Brick Company played in the local community.

“We are delighted to have been able to support the project and hope all our customers will enjoy the experience.”

Hansons Reach, in Broadmead Road, is now offering a new collection of two, three and four-bedroom homes.
